Collected by William Ellis who made three voyages to Madagascar for the London Missionary Society between 1856 and 1862.
The old collection label reads:  “Eyes on Madagascar. B. Primitive Carving. Kindly handle carefully. It is irreplaceable.” and on the reverse reads “Loan and Exhibitions Department, Livingstone House, 42, Broadway, Westminster, London S.W.1”
