Bara people, southern part of the central plateau of Madagascar
Pre-1870
Venetian trade beads, wood, glass, native fiber and a French 20 cent coin from 1866
Length of full necklace (including cord): 22 inches
Length of section containing amulets: 10 inches
This necklace has an original collection label, with ‘Madagascar’ written on one side, and ‘A household charm, C. Jukes’ on the rear. The assigned use is inaccurate: This is not a household charm, but rather a shamanic necklace.
‘C. Jukes’ refers to the Reverend C. Jukes who traveled with the London Missionary Society to Madagascar to meet the Betsileo people. He wrote a journal entitled ‘Country work in Madagascar: Journal of a visit to the Betsileo people’ in 1870.
The necklace was later acquired by Lars Sunde, Copenhagen, and then by a private collector in Copenhagen.
